What Discord noise suppression actually does

Discord's noise suppression is the Krisp machine-learning filter built into the voice client. It runs on your device and processes your microphone before the audio reaches the call, and it only treats your side of the conversation. If a friend keeps a vacuum and a barking dog on their end, that noise still arrives unless they enable it too.

You can reach the setting two ways: in an active voice channel through the noise suppression icon, or in User Settings under Voice & Video. Mobile clients have their own switch. Once it is on, it stays on for later calls until you toggle it off.

One behavior confuses people more than anything else: Discord turns the filter off automatically when CPU load spikes, then notifies you. If Krisp keeps switching itself off mid-call, the real fix is lowering the load on the machine, not buying a better microphone.

First checks, in order

Work through these before you reinstall anything. Most reports trace back to the first three.

1. Confirm the input device. Discord can hold on to a stale device that left the room with a Bluetooth headset. Re-select the microphone you are actually speaking into and run the mic test to hear what the call hears.
2. Re-apply the suppression setting. In Voice & Video, make sure Noise Suppression is set to Krisp rather than None. If the channel shows a sound-wave icon for suppression, check it there too; the two places can disagree.
3. Update the client and your sound driver, then restart Discord fully. Outdated builds are a documented cause of the filter misbehaving.
4. Look for a second noise processor. Windows audio enhancements, SteelSeries Sonar, NVIDIA Broadcast, and a standalone Krisp app can all sit in front of the same microphone. Two processors in one chain can cancel the effect or add echo, and Krisp's own setup guide for Discord warns about running both of its modes at once.
5. Reset voice settings. If the embedded Krisp filter is missing entirely, the Debugging panel in Voice & Video has a Reset Voice Settings button that restores it.
6. Rejoin the call. A noise canceller error is an internal glitch rather than a setting: leave the channel, rejoin, and restart the app if it comes back.

When your voice sounds robotic instead of clean

An input-rate mismatch between your microphone and the call can resample the audio and leave a metallic edge; Discord documents this symptom and suggests testing with a separate input and output device to isolate it.

Voice isolation greyed out or missing

Newer clients sometimes describe the same feature with different words, and availability depends on platform and system version — the filter officially runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. When the control is greyed out or absent, confirm you are using a current app rather than an old browser tab, update the client, reset voice settings, and sign out and back in so the settings file is rebuilt from scratch.

What the filter still cannot remove

Krisp targets non-voice sounds, and it is strongest on steady ones. The edge cases follow a pattern:

• Sharp transients. A mechanical keyboard, a controller click, or a mug meeting the desk can still land between phrases.
• Overlapping speech. The filter separates voice from noise; it does not separate one voice from another.
• Echo and reverb. These are room acoustics rather than noise, and the live filter can only do so much with them.
• Wanted sound. Music stings, game audio, and sound effects are not noise to the model, and aggressive suppression can chew on them.

If the call is already recorded

Suppression happens live, inside the call. The moment the audio is written to a file — a local recording, a clip someone saved, a voice memo of the room — the filter no longer applies, and no setting changed later can reach back into the file.

Cloud recordings, phone recordings, and screen captures all behave the same way: they store what was captured at the time, not what the live filter would have produced.

A saved conversation is still workable. If a participant recorded locally, their track carries one voice and fewer competing sounds than the mixed call; that file is the one to ask for.

Export and clean the recording instead of re-recording

The rescue path for a noisy recording is the same one used for any other file:

1. Export or copy the cleanest source. Prefer a single-voice track over the blended call mix, and export at the highest quality available.

• Set Discord to use your headset or interface microphone instead of the laptop array.
• Run one noise processor at a time, and keep an eye on CPU if the filter keeps disabling itself.
• For calls you expect to keep, record a local track so a clean source exists later.
